A stir of controversy spread through the science community after John Newlands’ 7 February 1863 communication was printed in ‘Chemical News’, suggesting the ‘law of octaves’ in relation to atomic weights of chemical elements. Though his contribution was later recognized as essential to the forming of the Periodic Table of Elements as we know it today, his likening the periodicity of eights to the musical scale elicited ridiculed by some of his contemporaries.
His story is a reminder that discoveries and breakthroughs are built upon the work of many. Thanks John Newlands!
